Cedar girls sweep LCC to advance to SubDistrict title game
CROFTON — The Cedar Catholic Lady Trojans volleyball team played Laurel-Concord-Coleridge in the opening round of the C2-5 Sub-District Volleyball Tournament in Crofton and came away with a relatively easy 25-14, 25-22 and 25-21 sweep over the Lady Bears.
“Relatively easy” considering it was the third time the two teams met in 2023 and the Lady Bears had won the previous two meetings.
The win over Laurel-Concord-Coleridge on Oct. 23 advanced Cedar Catholic to the tournament finals on Oct. 24 against the No. 1 seed in the tournament, Crofton.
Melayna McGregor paced the Lady Trojan offense with a double-double of 10 kills and 12 assists.
Grace Wortmann, Lyndsey Hamilton and Lauren Bernecker each slammed five winners; Lexi Eickhoff and Addison Walter tacked on four apiece.
Cedar Catholic also made some hay from the service line with nine ace serves led by McGregor and Walter with three each. Katy Jones, Bernecker and Hamilton all had one. Jones had 18 digs, while Annika Kuhn had 10 and Jones received and distributed 27 good passes.
Cedar Catholic finished off the Mid-State Conference Tournament with a win over Wayne back on Oct. 17, 2624, 25-22 and 25-23, to earn the sweep.
The Lady Trojans went on to drop the final regularseason match to Norfolk Catholic in straight sets, 25-19, 25-20 and 25-14, in Hartington on Oct. 19.
The winner of the match between Crofton and Cedar Catholic will move on to District action to be determined later in the week.
