Sudbeck is appointed to City Council
HARTINGTON — The Hartington City Council filled the fourth councilman seat at Monday’s meeting.
Roman Sudbeck will serve the remaining two years until the seat is up for election, replacing Deb Addison who resigned in December.
Sudbeck was the only person to apply for the vacancy.
A long-time Hartington resident, Sudbeck has served on the Variance Committee and Planning and Zoning Committee for several years and said he is ready to take this next step to represent his community.
“I am semi-retired and I just like to stay involved,” said Sudbeck. “I have always been intrigued in local government in small towns especially. I would like to see us keep moving forward, keep the taxes down, and look out for the small guy so everybody gets treated equally.”
Semi-retired from Miller Painting & Decorating, Sud- beck has worked with numerous communities as a contractor over the years.
During that time he has recognized a level of participation that helps set Hartington apart.
“We get a lot accomplished here with fewer people and I want to be a part of what our former leaders have established. Our current ones are doing a good job and I just thought it would be a good position to fall into and see what we can do.”
Sudbeck said he will see how these two years go before he considers running for the council seat in two years.
He said he does not have a preference of what department he will oversee. Currently, the Parks and Recreation Department, which includes oversight of the Complex/Auditorium, parks and swimming pool have yet to be assigned. Addison previously held that slot.
Sudbeck and newly-elected Councilman Brad Peitz now have to decide on which area to focus.
Sudbeck will be sworn in at the next City Council meeting.
He was not legally able to serve during Monday’s meeting, said City Attorney Steve Pier.
Also at Monday’s City Council meeting, the Hartington Library Board’s employment request was approved.
Kim Emanuel has been the part-time Children’s Librarian for the past two years and will be moved to full-time employment.
Emanuel has already completed her librarian certification, and it was stated at the City Council meeting that the library’s budget should not need to be amended to accommodate the change.
The City Council also approved a special designated liquor license to Cedar Catholic High School. The liquor license is in relation to the Cedar Catholic Gala on March 23.
Also Monday, the City Council heard from Hartington Baseball Association Vice President and American Legion Baseball Coach Don Whitmire.
Whitmire told Council members Hartington was selected by the Nebraska American Legion to host the Senior Area Districts this summer. This will be the third tournament to take place in Hartington this baseball season.
One thing that will need to be addressed before the tournament starts in July would be providing more accessible restrooms, however, Whitmire said.
The City Council adjourned at 7:30 p.m., after approving payment of the bills.
The next City Council meet- ing is slated for Monday, Feb. 11, at 7 p.m., in the Council Chambers at City Hall.
