Street projects move to the top of the list

HARTINGTON — Two big street repair projects have moved to the top of the Hartington City Council’s list.

The Council Monday approved a new One-and-Six Year street plan.

The plan is mandated by the state each year. In the past, the plan was approved each February, but the state is now requesting it be completed around the same time a new fiscal budget is approved.

The plan puts nine projects in the one-year phase. Just because an item appears on the list to be completed this year, though, doesn’t mean the work will be done this year, if at all.

Work on rebuilding a block of North Madison Avenue and improving the drainage and storm sewer system on that street is expected to be undertaken next year.

The street and storm sewer on South Broadway between Carkoski Field and the old Jerry’s Service station will need to be replaced, as well.

Mayor Mark Becker said he hopes to be able to bid both projets out later this year and have construction begin in the spring.

“This has been on the list for quite some time. With all the repairs being done around the state last year because of the floods, it just wasn’t feasible to do it then,” he said.

Other items on the one-year portion of the plan call for grading, curb and gutter, guard rail, storm sewer and erosion control of DuLain Ave. in West Field Acres.

Another project is for grading, curb work, storm sewer and erosion control work completed on Wirth Avenue in the Industrial Park.

The one unpaved block of South Cedar is also on this year’s improvement list.

Another project calls for paving of 150 feet of Hoese Street near the entrance to the Hartington Community Complex.

Work on extending a street in the proposed new Nordby housing addition is also on the list.

Also Monday, the Council approved a building permit for Terry Baller, who plans to put a garage onto the south side of his Capital Street home.

The Council learned a local resident is interested in having Goetz Street vacated south of Broadway Avenue. Council members decided more information is needed before any further action can be taken on this.
