HARTINGTON Stephen Louis Shank, 71, died in peace March 24, 2024, at Arbor Care Center, Hartington, following a stroke.

A Memorial service and Celebration of Life will be planned for a future date.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Wintz Funeral Home, Hartington.

Steve was born July 31, 1952, in Columbus, to Louis Francis and Ruth Rosin (Kallweit) Shank. He graduated from Columbus High School in 1970, and attended Platte Junior College, Columbus. Steve married Darlis Jean Rupp Sept. 6, 1975, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Columbus. Steve’s true loves were his family and friends, and he was passionate about his work at Nebraska Public Power District for 40 years. He moved his family to Hartington in 1985, and Hartington has been “home” ever since. Loving his community, he served as a past member on the church council at Trinity Lutheran Church and on the Hartington City Planning Commission.

To know him was to love him. He was an avid Husker fan. Most days you could find him surrounded by his friends in a game of Sheephead in Fordyce, and most evenings you’d find him at The Main Street Bar, enjoying the company of good friends and a Windsor water. He also enjoyed coaching his daughters’ Little League Basketball teams when they were younger, golfing in the Hartington Men’s League, traveling to Washington to salmon fish, a good game of pool, NCIS, and Chuck Norris.

Steve was a devoted husband to Darlis J. (Rupp) Shank for 48 years, and a loving dad to his two girls, Emily (Rodney) Bailey, Washington, and Tina Shank, Norfolk. He was also a proud grandfather of Noah Harmeier and Isaias Shank. Steve was also a much-loved brother to Linda (John) Richards, Amarillo, Texas; Mike (Phyllis) Shank and Tom (Theresa) Shank, both of Columbus; and an uncle to several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Ruth Shank; two grandchildren, Angel and Annie Shank; his nephew, Jeremy Shank; and niece, Nina Orr.

In lieu of flowers or plants, please donate to Saint Paul’s School, Norfolk, for their new gym or to a charity of your choice.
