Six teams earn Neb. high school football titles

LINCOLN — The Nebraska high school football season was able to withstand a marathon match against the COVID 19 virus and complete its season last Friday.

Six state champions were crowned in games played all across the state.

The state title games are traditionally played at Memorial Statium on the campus of the University of Nebraska, but because of state-mandated restrictions on crowd sizes, the Nebraska School Association decided that in five of the six classes, the top-seeded school in each class would host the state title game.

The Six-Man state title game was held on the University of Nebraska-Kearney football field.

Ord, which moved down to Class C2 this year, defeated Fremont Bergan 28-7 in the C2 state title game. Perrenial powerhouse Pierce claimed the C1 state title with a 28-19 win over Adams Central. In Class D1, Dundy County Stratton held off Burwell for a 42-36 double overtime win.

The Class D2 state title went to BDS, which defeated Thedford-Sandhills 36-28 to claim the first-place prize.

In Class B, Elkhorn High made it look easy, defeating Aurora 42-19.

McCool Junction got on a roll and never let up as they steamrolled Sterling 70-12 in the Six-man state title contest. Coleridge native Brett Freund was able to hoist the state championship trophy in Class A as he led his Omaha Westside team to

Froendt also had a small hand hand in Coleridge’s first state football title. He was a student manager when the Coleridge Bulldogs won the Class D 11-man football title in 1977.
