Sewer line at school must be repaired

HARTINGTON — Construction workers found an unexpected surprise while working on the new Hartington-Newcastle school addition.

It was discovered a sewer line constrution workers had planned to connect to is damaged and must be replaced.

The Hartington-Newcastle School Board approved the $23,312 expense at its Monday night meeting.

Also Monday, Board members heard about progress on the project.

“A lot has been done on the addition,” Supt. A.J. Johnson said.

The footings are all in and the block on the north wall of the structure is now in place. The other walls should be going up soon, Johnson said.

Also Monday, Johnson told the Board two school buses are currently inoperable and being repaired.

Board members said they might want to consider purchasing another bus next school year.

Elementary School Principal Sarah Edwards noted that parent-teacher conferences will be held Oct. 19. The FCCLA will be offering babysitting during parent-teacher conferences to help out parents who need to talk to the teachers.

Craig Frerichs of Coleridge completed a school safety audit in September, Board members were told.

The Board also agreed to put Morgan Buechler on the approved substitute teacher list. Buechler, a University of South Dakota student, is currently student-teaching high school English at HNS.
