Several receive awards for earning “1000 Books before Kindergarten”

Posted in:

HARTINGTON — The Hartington Library has several “1000 Books Before Kindergarten” award winners. Wren Becker, daughter of Eric and Katelyn Becker; Loretta and Marshall Derickson, daughter and son of Eric and Samantha Derickson; and Lucelly, daughter of Bonifacio and Heather Rodriguez Showen, all received a medal, a certificate of completion, a final prize and a free book from the library for their accomplishment.

Wren Becker is 3 years old and will attend Kindergarten at Holy Trintiy the fall of 2026. Loretta Derickson is excited to attend Kindergarten at East and West Catholic School this year, and Lucelly will attend Kindergarten the fall of 2024 at Hartington-Newcastle Public School.

Wren’s favorite part of the library is reading books, especially books on princesses and unicorns, and she loves the lollipops. Loretta loved the book “Mrs. McNosh Hangs up her Wash,” and when asked why she likes coming to the library, she said very sweetly, “because it’s just like being at home.” Marshall’s favorite books are the Dr. Seuss and Olaf from Frozen. Lucelly’s favorite thing about the library is StoryTime and the awesome crafts she gets to do. She also likes books on princess and dragons.

Great job to their parents for instilling the love of books and reading at a young age. This program was launched to get children ready for school, and to encourage more parent/child library visits. Books are logged and prizes are awarded along the way. One of thae best ways to encourage pre-reading skills is to spend time sharing books each and every day. Reading provides a solid foundation, a key to school and learning success!
