Seniors struggle against mighty foes

Posted in:

HARTINGTON — The Hartington American Legion Seniors went up against some pretty impressive competition over the weekend.

The Seniors went 0-5 last week to move to 2-11 this season.

“We saw some top competition,” coach Ryan Heimes said. “Our pitching has improved and our bats as well, but we need to cut down on the fielding errors.”

Hartington has three games this week, Coach Heimes said he hopes they can work on doing the small things to win the big games.

The Senior squad lost to Ponca (6-2), and West Point (8-4), before entering the starstudded three-day Lewis and Clark Conference tourney at Felber Park.

Hartington lost to Humbolt 7-0 in the opener on Friday and then fell to Renner Post 307 (18-0) and Sioux Falls East (15-0) on Saturday.

S.F. East 15, Hartington 0

Sioux Falls East clinched a berth in the tournament semifinals with a 15-0 victory over Hartington.

Andrew Evenson doubled and singled, driving in three, for East. Nate Sprenkle had a triple and two RBI. Aidan Beck had a double and three RBI.

East’s Myles Rees and Jackson Boe combined on the three-inning no-hitter. Rees struck out four in two innings.

Deagan Puppe took the loss for the Hartington squad.

Renner 18, Hartington 0

Renner combined for a 15-run second inning and a perfect pitching performance by Austin Henry to propel them to an 18-0 victory over Hartington on Saturday.

Harry Hueners doubled and singled, driving in three, for Renner. Dalton Garbers doubled. Zach Ridl posted a hit and four RBI. Aspen Dahl, Zak Evers, Dalton Garbers, Teegan Schlimgen and Manny Struck each had a hit in the victory.

Henry retired all nine batters he faced, striking out the first eight. Owen Heimes took the loss.

Hartington Juniors

The Juniors are now 3-2 after winning 2-0 at Ponca and dropping a 7-2 decision at home against West Point.

Keaton Steffen went four innings and allowed one hit to earn the win, while Jaxson Bernecker pitched three frames and walked three while striking out seven.
