Seniors earn wins over Crofton, Wakefield

HARTINGTON — The Hartington American Legion Seniors put a couple in the win column this week.

Hartington moved to 2-6 this campaign after a busy week of six games.

The squad went 2-4 overall with its first wins coming against Wakefield (9-5) and Crofton (14-13).

The local team is finally starting to figure things out, coach Ryan Heimes said.

“The bats are starting to come around, and the pitching is definitely improving, but there’s always room for improvement,” Heimes said. “We have six games this week, as well. I’m challenging the players to focus on their confidence all the way around the field. Hopefully, we can pick up a few more wins as well.”

Against Wakefield, Carson Arens and Dan Puppe both had two RBI and Carter Arens earned the win with four innings of four-hit ball pitched with three strikeouts.

The Seniors used an 11-run second inning to break out to a big lead and then held off a furious Crofton comeback for their second win — a 14-13 decision.

Hartington had six errors to allow Crofton back into the game, but Jaxon Bernecker (two hits, four RBI), Owen Heimes (four RBI, three-run homer) and Deagan Puppe (two hits) sparked the attack.

Hartington Juniors

The Juniors bounced back from their first loss of the season (7-2 at Wayne) with a 10-1 rout of Wakefield to move to 3-1 this spring.

Jaxson Bernecker had two hits and three RBI, and Carson Arens and Jaelen Lammers had two RBI apiece.

Lucas Wortmann pitched four innings of one-hit ball to earn the victory.
