WAKEFIELD – Randolph’s Senior Legion team closed out its season with two losses in the area tournament over the weekend.

Randolph faced off against second-seeded Oakland-Craig In the first game of the tournament Kaleb Gardner took to the mound first for Randolph and pitched a great first inning but fell into trouble in the second inning with Oakland-Craig scoring six runs. The Randolph offense didn’t put a run on the board until the fifth inning and by then it was too late as they were already down 10-0.

Randolph found themselves in the loser’s bracket for the second game in the area tournament and faced off against sixth-seeded Tekamah-Herman.

Randolph had to win this game to stay alive in the tournament and fell just short, losing 14-9.

The bats were alive for both teams in the first inning as it was 2-5 in Tekamah- Herman’s favor.

Gavin Wortman came in for pitching relief in the first to help hold some of the scoring and he did so for three innings with Tekamah-Herman only scoring one.

Randolph went on a run in the fourth inning, scoring five runs to put them in the lead 7-6. However, Tekamah-Herman answered hard in the fifth and sixth innings, scoring a combined eight runs.

Randolph could only answer with two runs – not enough to advance – and Randolph was eliminated in the second game RAND2 0 0 5 0 2 0 TKMH 5 1 0 0 4 4 X Batting M Gubbels,33,3R,RBI,2BB,3B;K Gardner,14,2R,RBI,BB,K,SB;J Miller,15,K;S Backer,2-4,R,RBI,K,2B;T Korth,0-1,RBI,3BB;G Jensen,1-3,R,2RBI,BB,SB;G Wortman,0-1,R,2BB;J Calder,14,R,RBI,2B,3K;L Lienemann, 0-3;L Bartles,0-0,BB.

In pre-tournament action, Randolph’s Seniors played a double header against Ponca.

Randolph lost both contests. In the first of the two games, Ponca defeated Randolph by a score of 7-2.

The game was tied 0-0 going into the top of the third with two great innings from Kaleb Gardner and a great inning from Gavin Wortman on the mound. But in the fourth inning, Ponca pulled away and scored six runs.

Randolph found no answer until it was too late, only scoring two runs in the game.

In the second game of the double header, Randolph fell even harder, 17-3.

Ponca continued the hot hitting coming into the second game by scoring eight runs in the first inning alone.

They continued to score at least two runs for the rest of the game. Unfortunately, Randolph still could not find the bats as they could only scrap together three runs in the game.

The two teams finished what they started June 12 when games were halted after a Ponca player’s injury.
