S.D. team knocks Wynot from State Tny.

Posted in:

MITCHELL, S.D. — Winner/Colome pitching kept Wynot’s big bats at bay all night in Sunday’s Class B State Amateur Baseball second-round game at Cadwell Park.

The Pheasants, 17-4, played small ball, scoring single runs in four seperate innings to help them earn a 6-2 win over Wynot.

Winner/Colome will now play Plankinton in the quarterfinals. Plankinton eliminated Crofton, the only other Neb. team in the tourney.

Wynot was able to put runners on throughout the game, but struggled to bring them home. The Expos grounded into three double plays and left seven runners on base in the contest.

Three straight Winner-Colome second-inning hits helped the Pheasants take the early lead.

Wynot used a two-out rally to cut the deficit. Devon Lammers singled and a Scott Morrison doubled to put runners in scoring position for Dawson Sudbeck, who singled in a run.

W-C kept chipping away, building a 6-1 lead in the seventh frame before Wynot was able to score one more run.

Lee Heimes, Jackson Sudbeck and Dawson Sudbeck each had two hits and RBIs for Wynot. Kyle Wiepen and Scott Morrison each doubled. Kyle Wiepen added a hit.

Wynot’s long-time player-manager also won the Mark Mehlhaff Memorial Award after making a come back from multiple injuries sustained after falling 20 feet from a ladder during a home improvement project last August.

J.J. Farner put together the complete-game win after allowing just two earned runs on nine hits and two walks.

W-C got things going in the second inning as Austin Richey and Jeff Harris had RBI singles in the top of the second. Chandler Bakley plated a run on a ground ball in the third. Austin Calhoon had a pair of RBI singles for Winner/Colome, helping to offset 11 runners left on base.

Calhoon finished 3-for-5 with a pair of RBIs, while Bakley and Kelly O’Bryan each collected two hits.

The loss ended a string of five straight wins and eight of nine after a July 3 loss to rival Crofton.
