Schommer competes at State golf tourney

Posted in:

NORTH PLATTE — Maci Schommer represented the Cedar Catholic girls golf team at the 2023 Nebraska Class C State Golf Championships at Lake Maloney Golf Course in North Platte for the second time in her career.

It was incorrectly reported it was her third trip in last week’s paper, but she missed a third trip earlier in her career by a single stroke in the District meet.

Schommer tied for 27th out of a field of 92 golfers with a two-day, 36hole total of 190.

In the first round on Oct. 9, Schommer came through with a 96 and was two strokes better the second day with a 94.

Schommer endured a talented field, the nerves of another State tournament and even a one-hour frost delay on the opening day to impress her coach.

“Maci played some really good golf,” Cedar Catholic coach Sheila Jueden said. “Lake Maloney offers tight fairways, hills and valleys, deep roughs and fast tiered greens. She found her way around the course in pretty good shape.”

Schommer’s coach credited her mental game for keeping her up there in the competition.

“She kept her head clear and managed to play a decent two days of great golf,” Jueden said. “The course is very challenging and Maci was able to find the greens, which allowed her to score well.”

Schommer avoided the big scores the entire 36 holes with her highest score only one seven over the two days and her lowest a three.

She had one birdie and six pars. Camryn Johnson of Broken Bow won the individual title with a 71/78 for a 149, one shot ahead of Olivia Lovegrove of Lincoln Christian.

Kaylin Gaughenbaugh of O’Neill placed 10th with a 171 and Wayne’s Joslyn Johnson was 14th with a 175.

Broken Bow won the team championship after firing a 681 over two days. Minden was second with a 690.

West Holt was fourth, Wayne was fifth and O’Neill was sixth in the team race to show the strength of Cedar Catholic’s district.

“I’m very proud of Maci and how she played this year,” Jueden said. “Many ups and downs, but when it came down to it, she had it figured out.”
