Schaefer burns up the course here Friday

Posted in:

HARTINGTON — Matthew Schaefer broke the 18-hole course record at the Hartington Golf Course Friday, firing a 62.

He carded a 29 on the front nine and hit a 33 on the back nine to ink his name into the record books.

The previous 18-hole record was a 63 and was a three-way tie between Jason Merkel, Kyle Schellpeper and Schaefer.

Merkel still holds the nine-hole record firing a 28.

Schaeffer is a sophomore on the South Dakota State University men’s golf team.

Prior to going to SDSU, he earned National Junior College All American honors while competing for Northeast Community College in Norfolk. He earned a 21st place finish at the 2019 NJCAA National Golf Tournament.

While in high school, he won the 2018 and 2016 Mid-State Conference golf titles at Cedar Catholic. He also broke the school record and the Mid-State Conference record, shooting an 18-hole 66 at the 2018 tournament.

He was also named to the 2017 and 2018 Nebraska All-State Golf teams and was named team MVP from 2016-2018.

Mike Johnson, his high school golf coach, played the back nine with Schaefer Friday.

“He’s just at a whole different level than everybody else,” Johnson said. “I thought I shot a pretty good round, but he beat me by six strokes.”
