FORDYCE — Rita Zavadil, 87, Fordyce, died unexpectedly July 7, 2018, at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton, S.D.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., July 11, at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Menominee, with Rev. Paul Hoesing officiating.
Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
Visitation and a wake service were Tuesday at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service at the church.
Pallbearers will be her sons, Terry, Dennis, Steve and Patrick Zavadil, and grandsons, Scott and Matt Zavadil.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Rita’s grandchildren and all of her close friends.
Rita was born June 1, 1931, to Henry and Theresa (Bruns) Schaefer at the family farm near Menominee. She grew up and lived in the Menominee area all her life. She attended eight years of elementary education at Menominee and graduated from Mt. Marty High School in Yankton. She married Wilfred Zavadil Sept. 2, 1952, at St. Boniface, Menominee, with the Rev. Otto Zillig officiating. Following her marriage, she helped her husband on the farm while raising her family.
Rita enjoyed gardening, raising chickens, crocheting and playing cards. She loved visiting with her grandchildren, family and friends.
She was a member of St. Boniface Ladies Guild and Christian Mothers. She enjoyed the opportunity to eat out and spend time with friends and family.
Rita is survived by her five children, Terry (Mary Jean) Zavadil, Fordyce; Dennis Zavadil, Bancroft; Steve (Jeani) Zavadil, Fordyce;, Patrick (Patricia) Zavadil, Fordyce; and Karla (Bill) McDonald, Yankton, S.D.; 14 grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Fern Schaefer, Evelyn Schaefer and Helen Schaefer, all of Yankton, S.D.; and many nieces and nephews.
Rita was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Wilfred, in 2010, son, Kenneth, in 1971, brothers, Sylvester, Ralph, Harold Schaefer, and sisters, Maxine, Mildred Schroeder, Mary Hoesing, and Theresa.
