Randolph ends Devils season in SubDistrict title game

WISNER — The Wynot Blue Devils and the Randolph Cardinals met in the D-2 4 SubDistrict finals Thursday.

The Blue Devils fell behind early, and rallied in the second half only to see the game slip away in the final minutes.

The game was much closer than the final score indicated as the Cardinals hit their free throws late in the game to secure the 54-44 win.

Randolph was led by their senior group of Keaton Backhaus with 18 points, Carter Schnoor with 14 points and Jamison Svehla, who had a big first quarter and finished with 12 points.

Wynot got 15 points from Peyton Wieseler, who hit five threes for his 15 points. Anthony Haberman contributed 11 points and Jack Kuchta came off the bench to contribute eight points to the Blue Devils’ offensive totals.

In the opening quarter, Wynot got five points from Jack Kuchta and a pair of buckets in close by Garrett Lange.

Randolph countered with shsots from Jamison Svehla to earn an 18-12 early advantage.

In the second quarter, the Blue Devils got a pair of 3-pointers from Peyton Wieseler and one by Trystan Heimes, but they still lost ground as the Cardinals got eight more points from Keaton Backhaus and a bucket each from Carter Schnoor and Jamison Svehla to increase their lead to 31-22 at halftime.

Wynot rallied from long range in the third quarter, as the Blue Devils went on a 16-8 run to climb back into contention.

A pair of treys by Peyton Wieseler and one each by Anthony Haberman and Jack Kuchta fueled the comeback.

Randolph got all eight of their points in the quarter from Carter Schnoor, as the Cardinals clung to a 39-38 lead after three periods of play.

The game remained tight until the three-minute mark of the final quarter.

Wynot’s Peyton Wieseler hit his fifth trey of the night and Anthony Haberman drove in for a basket plus one.

Randolph got a pair of buckets by Keaton Backhaus and one by Justin Haselhorst and went 6-7 from the freethrow line in the 90 seconds to seal the 54-44 win.

Randolph advances to district play with their 16-7 record.

Wynot’s season came to a close with a 7-17 record.
