Preliminary hearing set for July 29 in sexual assault case

Posted in:

HARTINGTON — A South Sioux City man accused of sexual assault of a child will be in Cedar County Court July 29 for a preliminary hearing on the charges.

The hearing was set to determine if sufficient evidence exists against Guillermo Coronado Ortiz to move the case to Cedar County District Court.

Coronado Ortiz, 59, of South Sioux City, made his initial court appearance here last week on four charges — including firstdegree sexual assault of a child — for an alleged incident last week at a Lake Yankton beach.

Cedar County Attorney Nicholas Matney filed two felony and two misdemeanor charges against Coronado Ortiz.

The felony charge of firstdegree sexual assault of a child carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.

He was arrested June 16 after a 911 call from Lake Yankton reporting the allegations.

The felony child abuse charge alleges he knowingly and intentionally permitted a minor child to be placed in a situation “to be sexually exploited by allowing, encouraging or forcing a minor to engage in debauchery, public indecency, or obscene or pornographic photography, or films.”
