Practices begin for high school sports season

Posted in:

HARTINGTON — The sound of whistles permeated the humidity-filled air around Hartington Monday.

The whistles, an important part of any coaching attire, were being used to help direct the first day of fall sports practice around the state.

The NSAA mandates each year when high school teams can begin practicing for a new season.

Cedar Catholic football players hit the practice field for the new year at 1:30 p.m., Monday, while Hartington-Newcastle football players got practice started at 6:30 p.m. Monday.

Cedar Catholic is expected to have about 40 boys out for football this year.

Hartington-Newcastle head coach Corey Uldrich said he is expecting 23-25 boys out this year.

Wynot High School Coach Steve Heimes said there are only 16 boys on the Blue Devil roster this season, which will mean the Devils will have to avoid injury in order to make it through the season.

Volleyball season also began with the gyms at Hartington-Newcastle, Wynot and Cedar Catholic all busy with practice.

Cedar Catholic will have its first competition of the year Aug. 26 when they take part in a Volleyball Jamboree in Creighton.

The new NSAA method of classifying sports according to the seperate enrollment of boys and girls has pushed Cedar Catholic down to Class D1 this year, which means Cedar and HNS will once again be competing against each other in SubDistricts.

The NSAA has not yet released the complete volleyball schedules. The state’s sanctioning body is also still working to determine exactly which teams will be in which SubDistricts and where those SubDistricts will be held. That information is expected to be released later this month.
