Potts, Pinkelman advance to State
LINCOLN — Colin Potts helped the new Hartington-Newcastle high school bowling team wind up its first season on a high note.
Potts finished 10th in State Singles Bowling The event consisted of bowlers from all of Nebraska’s varying sized schools.
When the dust was setled Fremont’s Cole Macaluso was crowned as the Singles State Champion. Adam Gollhofer of Millard North earned runner-up honors.
One area bowler, Wayne’s Calvin Starzl, advanced to the Final Eight. He had to face Macaluso in the first round, however.
The Hartington bowling program really made its mark in its first season as a sanctioned bowling team.
On Feb. 3, the Wildcats made a trip to Kings Lanes, Norfolk, to part in their first district bowling meet.
Both Rebekah Pinkelman and Colin Potts were able to qualify for Monday’s state competition in Lincoln.
Both bowled four games with the top eight cumulative scores advancing to the Singles State Championship bracket.
“I think both have worked really hard this year and I believe they will be ready and will compete well,” Hartington-Newcastle coach Nate Holan said prior to the state meet.
At districts, bowlers rolled three games of singles, followed by five games of bakers.
The cumulative score of all those games decided the team winner.
Potts’ total score of 572 (180, 180, 212) placed him in fourth place, which was plenty good to advance to the State singles meet.
Pinkelman finished the night bowling a 140, 150, and 157 for a total score of 447 which placed her fifth in Norfolk and sent her off to Lincoln for the final weekend of action this season.
As for the teams, the Wildcats boys and girls both finished third overall at districts, missing out on state as a whole representation.
Other scorers that bowled with Potts and Pinkelman included, Jeremiah Polak who finished with a 137 and 143, Mayson McIntosh’s scores of 128 and 138, Jack Stevens who wrapped up his season with a 131 and 135 and Charlie Dendinger who ended his campaign solidly with a 141 and 160.
Girls that joined Pinkelman’s efforts were Kaydence McCray who bowled a 106 and 116, Grace Kleinschmit’s scores of 85 and 106 and Meredith McGregor who rolled games of 112 and 125.
“The key to our teams successes this year have been working in practice and getting better every week,” Holan said. “We are a better team now than when we started the year, and we will build off that next year.”
