Pony team is still unbeaten in 2021

Posted in:

HARTINGTON — The Hartington Ponies moved to 5-0 this late sprin with a 5-1 win over Atkinson afte a week off from play.

“It was great to pick up this win versus a really strong Atkinson team,” Ponies coach Don Whitmire said. “Last year, they were the one seed in the league. Our pitching was great.”

Breiton Whitmire struck out 11 batters to earn the win from the bump.

The team played three additional experience innings that was also a sign of positives for Whitmire.

“I was impressed with our pitching in these innings, also,” Whitmire said. “Jared Rutar, Aaron Wortmann and Brady Hochstein all pitched an inning and were able to fill up the zones with strikes.”

In the win, Aiden Rosener’s RBI gave the Ponies a 1-0 lead that held through the fifth inning.

The local boys then padded their advantage with a four-run barrage.

“I still want to see us put the ball in play with two strikes, but this will come as the season progresses,” Whitmire said. “I want to see the boys continue to work hard and play as a team. We start our big stretch of tournaments and games so we will have a lot of baseball.”
