Pony team gets off to a slow start

O’NEILL — The Quad County Hartington Pony League baseball team got the 2020 season underway Thursday night.

Unfortunately, the long layoff showed as Hartington struggled falling 17-4 to O’Neill.

The Hartington team was doomed by some early pitching mistakes and by a rusty defense. The Hartington team ended up giving up 17 runs on six hits.

Keaton Arens and Brayden Reifenrath collected doubles to lead Hartington at the plate, while Breiton Whitmire also collected a hit. Reifenrath also collected an RBI in the contest.

Grayden Hochstein reached base twice on walks. He made the best of his time on the base paths, stealing three bases and scoring a run.

Cole Heimes swiped two bases and scored one run for Hartington. Whitmire also scored a run and stole a base.

Weston Heine, Matthew Loecker and Logan Eickhoff shared the pitching duties with Eickhoff fanning three O’Neill batters in the contest.

The team is slated to host Spencer June 24.
