Ponca wins battle of state-rated teams

PONCA - The Wynot Lady Blue Devils were sluggish on offense at the beginning of both halves in their matchup against the Ponca Lady Indians Thursday night.

Ponca also took advantage of an 18-10 edge on the offensive glass to give themselves extra chances and went on to the big 49-37 win in a battle of state-rated teams.

Ponca was led by Samantha Ehlers with a game-high 23 points and supported by Alyssa Crosgrove with 13 points. Ashlyn Kingsbury led her team with 10 rebounds

Wynot got 16 points and seven rebounds by Karley Heimes and seven points and five boards by Kendra Pinkelman to provide most of their offense.

Wynot got field goals from Kendra Pinkelman and Amy Tramp in a struggling first quarter of offense. Ponca went on a 12-5 run led by four points by Samantha Ehlers and a three pointer by Alyssa Crosgrove as they built an early lead.

Karley Heimes showed up in the second quarter dumping in 8 points. Ponca kept pace with another trey by Crosgrove and 7 more points by Ehlers as they earned a 23-15 halftime lead.

In the third quarter Wynot got four more points by Heimes and a 3-pointer by Kendra Pinkelman but Ponca opened up a big lead thanks in part to eight more points by Samantha Ehlers and a basket plusone by Gracen Evans as the Lady Indians increased their lead to 38-22 going into the final frame.

In the fourth quarter Wynot would rally behind four more points each by Krystal Sudbeck and Karley Heimes and a bucket each from Edyn Sudbeck and Kendra Pinkelman. Ponca held off the Blue Devils with five more points by Samantha Ehlers and a basket each by Addie McGill and Alyssa Crosgrove and earned the 49-37 win.
