Posted in:

FORDYCE — An early-morning altercation here Tuesday sent one man to the hospital in critical condition.

According to Cedar County Sheriff’s Dept. reports, the unidentified man was  stabbed with what looked to be a machete some time before 7 a.m., Tuesday.

Rhea Haug called 911 to report her estranged husband, Kevin Haug, 44, had stabbed the man at her home at 106 Fourth Street in Fordyce.

She reported the man was bleeding severely from his legs, head and stomach area.

Kevin Haug then left the scene in a white 2007 Chevrolet Suburban.

Haug was believed to be headed to South Dakota. As of press time Tuesday, Haug had not yet been apprehended.

Cedar County Attorney Edward H. Matney said law enforcement is requesting the public’s assistance in locating Haug

Matney said Haug may be located in the Yankton or Brookings, South Dakota, area. Haug is currently wanted in connection with an alleged early morning knife attack in Cedar County.

Fordyce area residents Tuesday morning said they knew of the incident and were nervous that Haug may not have left the area.

Matney said Haug is accused of Count I, Felony Attempted Murder in the First Degree; Count II, Assault in the First Degree; Count III, Burglary; Count IV, Use of a Deadly Weapon to Commit a Felony; and Count V, Possession of a Deadly Weapon to Commit a Felony.

Counts I, II and IV are Class II Felonies, which carry maximum possible penalties of 50 years imprisonment per count. Count III is a Class IIA Felony, which carries a maximum possible penalty of 20 years imprisonment. Count V is a Class III Felony, which carries a maximum possible penalty of four years imprisonment and two years post-release supervision, or $25,000 fine or both.

Matney cautioned, “Members of the public should not approach Haug. Instead, they should contact law enforcement right away.”
