Pleasanton ends Blue Devils’ season

WYNOT — The Wynot Blue Devils hosted the Pleasanton Bulldogs on Friday in the second round of state football playoffs.

The Blue Devils were able to hang in there with the Bulldogs in the first half but Pleasanton outscored Wynot 20-0 in the third quarter to take control and went on to win 46-30. The Bulldogs had a big size advantage and seemed to wear down the Blue Devils as the game went on. “You can’t have 5 turnovers and a blocked punt and win against a good team. The team played with a lot of heart and spirit. Our players gave a great effort all year starting with the four seniors who were great leaders both on and off the field,” stated Wynot head coach Steve Heimes.

The Bulldogs were lead on offense by Tyce Westland with 8 catches for 121 yards and three touchdowns. The Bulldogs ground game was in top form as well as Treven Wendt rushed for 152 yards and Kray Kingston amassed 132 yards and each scored a touchdown as well for the visitors.

Wynot was led by Anthony Haberman who took rushing honors with 198 yards on 22 carries for the Blue Devils and scored three touchdowns. Owen Sudbeck garnered Wynot’s other score. Jack Kuchta had a break out game with six catches for 101 yards.

On defense Wynot was led by Garrett Lange with 14 tackles. Owen Sudbeck and Colin Wieseler each had an interception.

Pleasanton’s defensive unit was led by Tyce Westland with 15 tackles and Broderick Paitz with 12 stops. Copeland Carsten had an interception for the Bulldogs as well.

Pleasanton would get on the score board first on a 23 yard touchdown run by Treven Wendt. The PAT run was stopped as the Bulldogs led 6-0.

Wynot answered right back on their next offensive series. Catches of 23, 8, and 6 yards by Jack Kuchta fueled the drive. Anthony Haberman dove in from the 1 yard line for the score. The PAT run failed the score was tied 6-6 at the 7:30 mark of the first quarter.

The defensive units would each turn away scoring drives of the other team.

Pleansanton’s Tyce Westland blocked a Wynot punt attempt for the Dogs but Pleasanton gave the ball right back on a Colin Wieseler interception.

Late in the opening period Wynot scored from long distance as Anthony Haberman found a crease on the left side and galloped 53 yards to paydirt. Haberman then hit Trystan Heimes for the PAT as Wynot held the 14-6 lead at the end of one quarter of play.

At the mid-point of the second quarter the Bulldogs mounted a scoring drive. Tyce Westland capped the drive on a 22-yard catch and run down the left side line for the score. The PAT pass was off the mark as Pleasanton had closed the gap to 14-12. A shanked punt gave the Bulldogs good field position on the next series but on the very first play Owen Sudbeck would give Wynot the ball right back on an interception of an errant pass.

Later in the period a costly fumble by the Blue Devils gave the Bulldogs another short field. This time a Kray Kingston pass to Tyce Westland of 22 yards resulted in a score. Westland also caught the PAT to give the Bulldogs a 20-14 lead at halftime.

Pleasanton would open the second half with quick strike score. A 49 yard run by Kray Kingston would set up a 1 yard sneak on the Bulldogs first series of the period. Tyce Westland caught the PAT pass to make the score 28-14.

Kray Kingstand would cap the Bulldogs next scoring drive on a 18- yard sweep around the right side on another Pleasanton touchdown. The PAT run was stopped but the Bulldogs had extended their lead to 34-14.

Meanwhile Wynot’s offense sputtered with a series of penalties, a fumble and a interception by Westland that cut short some promising drives.

Tyce Westland would get his third touchdown catch of the night early in the fourth quarter on a 32 yard tackle busting run. The PAT run was stuffed but the Bulldogs lead had ballooned to 40-14.

At the five-minute mark Wynot would get another scoring drive going. A pair of first down catches by Jack Kuchta moved the ball into the Bulldogs red zone. Owen Sudbeck would try the right side and then cutback left for the 10-yard touchdown. Trystan Heimes caught the PAT to make the score 40-20.

Wynot tried an onside kick but Pleasanton recovered it. Tevan Wendt had a 15-yard run to set up a 9 yard scamper by Kray Kingston for another Bulldog score. The PAT was no good as the Bulldogs lead had grown to 46-20.

Late in the quarter Wynot got their final score of the night. It was set up by a 32-yard scramble by Anthony Haberman and cashed in on a 20 yard run by Owen Sudbeck. Sudbeck also ran in the PAT.

“Even though we missed two games due to Covid this year the team was grateful to have a chance to play football,” added Coach Heimes.
