NSAA says the Fall sports season will go on as planned

Posted in:

LINCOLN — High school athletes and fans got some good news Monday from the Nebraska School Activities Association.

While many states have already announced either a cancellation or a postponement to their fall sports seasons, the NSAA announced Monday they plan to hold the fall sports season as currently scheduled.

First practices for football, volleyball, cross country, girls golf, boys tennis, and softball are all set to begin Aug. 10.

“The health and safety of our student participants, coaches, and officials has been our priority as we work to provide activities for our member schools,” NSAA Executive Director Jay Bellar said. “This will not change.”

Bellar said the NSAA understands modifications may have to be made along the way, but as of right now everything is full steam ahead.

“Please be understanding and flexible as we continue to try to navigate through this pandemic,” he said. “We will continue to work with the Governor’s office, Nebraska Department of Education, and the local health departments to make the best decisions for your students and our member schools.”

The NSAA is making several recommendations in hopes of helping to keep people safe during practices and games.

• keep all activities, practices, and scrimmages in-house to avoid interaction with other teams

• wear masks when not in competition

• keep groups small and attendance recorded

• wash your hands regularly

• disinfect equipment regularly

• stay home if you don’t feel well

• stay home if someone in your household tests positive for COVID-19

Bellar said the hope is to return to normalcy soon, but people must work together in order to help make that happen, he said.

“Our ultimate goal is to return to school to have a full, productive, healthy season and create a great experience for our students,” he said. “Please, help us achieve this goal.”
