New schedule includes two local doubleheaders

LINCOLN — The NSAA provided a couple of pleasant surprises for the new high school football schedule.

According to the schedule released last week by the NSAA, Russ Hochstein Field will play host to a pair of double-headers.

Cedar Catholic and Hartington-Newcastle are both slated to open the season at home Aug. 27.

Cedar will host O’Neill on that day, while the Wildcats will play host to Randolph.

Both local teams got off to a good start last year when they played these two teams on the road.

HNS defeated Randolph 66-36 in their 2020 season opener, while the Trojans earned a tough-fought 19-16 win over C1 O’Neill at the home of the Eagles.

The Wildcats are also slated to close the season at home.

HNS will host Wakefield in their regular season finale, which is set for Oct. 15 at Russ Hochstein Field.

That same day, Cedar Catholic will play host to another Dixon County powerhouse when Ponca comes to town.

HNS struggled against Wakefield, dropping a 64-41 decision to the undefeated Trojans to close out their season with a .

Cedar fared better at Ponca, rolling together a 46-14 win over the Indians.

Cedar Catholic finished the 2020 regular season with a 7-2 record.

Cedar has four games on its 2021 schedule against teams that made the playoffs last year.

The Wildcats will go up against six teams that advanced to last year’s Class D1 playoffs.
