Neligh knocks Seniors out of Conference Tourney

Posted in:

HARTINGTON — The American Legion Seniors ran into a buzzsaw in the semifinals of the Elkhorn Valley Conference Tournament.

Hartington ended a run in the League Tournament, losing 9-6 to Neligh on Friday. Hartington had the four seed in the tournament and took on the top seed Neligh after defeating Atkinson on Thursday.

Hartington had costly errors, five in total, that continued to help Neligh bring runs across to score throughout the game. Dain Whitmire started on the mound for Hartington but was only responsible for one of the six runs that came across to score during his outing.

Hartington even tied the game 6-6 before Whitmire exited the game, but Neligh tacked on some late runs to quickly take the lead back and then hang on to win.

At the plate, Hartington again outhit the opponent on the way to a loss. Hartington’s eight hits to Neligh’s six shows the danger that the Hartington Seniors can have at the plate.

Tunrer Korth led the way at the plate, going 3-4 with two runs and two RBIs. Korth stole second on an athletic play where he hurdled the second baseman receiving the throw from the catcher. Korth also hit a double in the game.

With the loss, Hartington now prepares for the Class C Area 1 Tournament in Crofton starting on Friday. All games will be played in Crofton throughout the eight team tournament. Hartington earned the four seed and will face fifth seed and host Crofton on Thursday at 7pm. For full bracket details look for the posting of the bracket on page 10.
