Mustangs come to town Friday to face the Trojans

HARTINGTON - Cedar Catholic looks to end the football regular season on a high note with the Stanton Mustangs coming to town on Friday.

The Trojans sit at 3-5 while the Mustangs are 2-6 on the season.

Both teams have lost to Norfolk Catholic and Battle Creek and won against David City. Cedar Catholic defeated Ponca and Crofton, while Crofton earned losses to both District opponents.

These two teams are rather familiar with each other, and Cedar coach Chad Cattau says the Mustangs have a history of preparing well against the Trojans.

“Stanton has always done a very good job of exposing a team’s weaknesses,” said Cattau. “They made some nice plays early against Norfolk Catholic, but they couldn’t maintain any drives. I have a great amount of respect for their coaches because they are always prepared and they play hard.”

Cattau notes that Stanton has a creative running attack with sophomore Sutton Pohlman leading the way this season.

“They will run a variety of formations and try to get the ball in Pohlman's hands in a variety of ways,” said Cattau. “They will play him at WR, RB, and QB and use his talents in a very creative manner.”

For Cedar, a big win could propel the Trojans into the playoffs, but after a loss to Battle Creek last week the Trojans have dwindled and the team will have to rely on outside help to get into the top 16 for a playoff spot.

“The chances are very slim, but we have to play this as a must-win game for us,” said Cattau. “Our kids and coaches will take a great approach to this game and we will lay it all on the line. We all know there is a good chance this is the last game for our seniors and we will do whatever we can to get them a win.”

This has been a young team for Cedar Catholic that has just four seniors leading the way. Josh Pinkelman Matthew Becker, Tristan Albers, and Derek Heimes have led the way for the Trojans this year.

The Cedar Catholic team has really put the pieces together in the latter half of the season, and Cattau says practice this week will be about continuing that effort.

“We want to get better each day as a team and we will take that same approach this week. We owe it to our kids to prepare them well and put them in the best place to win on Friday night.”

Stanton comes to Hartington on Friday night to finish the regular season under the lights at Russ Hochstein field beginning at 7 p.m.
