Morten, Harms are honored by area coaches

HARTINGTON — Post-season honors are now being handed out to area athletes.

The Lewis & Clark Conference announced its All Conference boys basketball team and honorable mention lists, and a dozen area players wrapped up the campaign among the elite.

Hartington-Newcastle Wildcat seniors Shaye Morten and Sam Harms made the Central Division’s First Team, along with Wynot junior Anthony Haberman.

Wildcat senior Matthew Meisenheimer and Wynot junior Peyton Wieseler were chosen for honorable mention honors.

Morten (16.3 ppg, 4 rpg, 3.7 apg, 2.5 spg) and Harms (12.8 ppg, 6.5 rpg, 3.4 apg, 2.0 spg, 1.6 bpg) played big roles for the 13-10 Wildcats.

“Shaye was a tremendous leader on and off the court for our team, his work-ethic was unmatched,” HNS head coach Nick Haselhorst said. “He was a complete player that can dribble, pass, score, and defend. He’d defend the other team’s best player and we wanted the ball in his hands to make the right decisions as our point guard. Sam was a complete player that could defend, rebound, pass, and score. He had the ability to score inside and out along the perimeter and was able to make the right pass. Defensively, his length affected shots and teams had to adjust accordingly.”

Meisenheimer didn’t do too badly himself with 7.1 ppg, 4.5 rpg and 1.5 spg averages.

“Matthew was a great kid with a tremendous work ethic and attitude,” Haselhorst said. “He communicated well, gave great effort, and had elite strength. Matthew was deceptively nimble and agile for his size, which fit him perfectly in the post.” 

Haberman and Wieseler both played the biggest roles on a 6-17 Wynot team.

“Anthony loves to play the game and is a very competitive player,” Wynot head coach Lee Heimes said. “He was our leading scorer. He could score outside and inside.  He is left-handed and a hard person to defend.”

Heimes said Wieseler could do almost anything on the court.

“Peyton has a well-rounded game and is a very smart player who knows and understands the game,” he said. “He is a person who gets everybody involved but also knows how to score himself.”

The Omaha World Herald also released its All State teams on Sunday. No Wildcat or Blue Devil players made that list, but several athletes from Randolph and Laurel-Concord-Coleridge earned nods on the elite teams.

LCC Seniors Noah Schutte and Ty Erwin both picked up First Team All State and First Team All Conference honors for the state champion Bears.

Junior Cael Hartung and sophomore Evan Haisch made honorable mention selection on both teams.

Schutte was a dominant force scoring 23.6 ppg, grabbing 13.1 rebounds a night and dishing three assists while ripping 2.7 steals an outing.

Erwin went for 14.2 ppg, 4.2 rpg and 3.6 apg. Hartung (8.6 ppg, 5.3 rpg) and Haisch (11.7 ppg, 3.5 rpg) did their fair share for the champions.

“Noah was our go-to guy,” LCC head coach Todd Erwin said. “He works hard and can do everything. However, he learned how to do the right things to make his teammates better and that is what got us over the top. Ty got better every year, and played his best basketball in Lincoln. He does everything for this team while being a soft-spoken leader – calm and confident.”

Hartung is also a very hard worker, Coach Erwin said.

“Cale works hard and has started every game for us since his freshman year. He’s our Dennis Rodman and gets all the dirty work done. Evan is a great shooter that brings great athleticism to both sides of the court. He’s only a sophomore that has a lot to learn but gains on it every day.”

Randolph senior Carter Schnoor and Keaton Backhaus were West Division First Team selections for the Cardinals while senior Jameson Svehla was honorable mention.

The Cardinals (17-8) saw a run to the D2 tournament sparked by the play of Schnoor (16.4 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 4.7 apg and 2.7 spg), Backhaus (14.2 ppg, 7.7 rpg, 3.3 apg and 2.1 spg) and Svehla (15 ppg, 4.7 rpg, 3.4 apg an 1.9 spg).
