Mary Ann Hans

YANKTON, S.D. — Mary Ann Hans, 91, Yankton, S.D., formerly of Wynot, died peacefully Feb. 16, 2019, at Avera Sister James Care Center, Yankton.

Visitation at the church will be Feb. 21, from 5-8 p.m., with a Vigil Service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue Friday at the church one hour prior to services.

Mass of Christian burial will be Friday, Feb. 22nd at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Family (Sacred Heart) Catholic Church, Wynot, with Rev. Eric Olsen and Rev. Jeremy Hans officiating.

Burial will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Wynot.

Pallbearers will be Mary Ann’s grandsons, Michael Tullis, Jason Hans, Justin Hans, Chad Wieseler, Ryan Wieseler, David Wieseler, Russ Zeisler, Eric Modde, Luke Modde, Nick Modde, Steve Simmons, David Hans and Jacob Hans. Honorary Pallbearers will be the granddaughters, Erin Tullis, Becky Hans, Julie Lautenschlager, Crystal Epstein, Heather Blom, Ashlyn Hans, Kayla Hans and Mary Ann’s 25 great-grandchildren.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Wintz Funeral Home, Hartington.

Mary Ann was born Dec. 27, 1927, in Bow Valley, to Anton “Tony” and Elizabeth (Schmidt) Schulte. She grew up on a farm in the Bow Valley area and graduated from Holy Trinity High School, Hartington, in 1945.

After graduating from Omaha School of Business, Mary Ann worked as a secretary in Omaha, and Seattle, Wash. She then worked as a legal secretary in Yankton, S.D., until her marriage to Marcus “Jim” Hans Aug. 23, 1949, in Bow Valley. They resided on a farm south of Wynot, where they raised 11 children. Mary Ann was an active member of the Wynot Sacred Heart Altar Society, Christian Mothers, and American Legion Auxiliary Post 31. She was an amazing mother and homemaker who dedicated her life to family and friends. She spent much of her time sewing, cooking, baking, gardening, and helping with the farm chores. Once her children were grown, she worked as a cook at Wynot Public School until her retirement. She was known for her great sense of humor, and loved playing the harmonica for her grandchildren.

Mary Ann is survived by her 11 children and their spouses: Colleen (Jim) Tullis, Aurora, Colo.; Jim (Lori) Hans, Wynot; Susan Brewer, Broomfield, Colo.; Karen (Dale) Wieseler, Yankton, S.D.; Kathy (Don) Zeisler, Omaha; Sally (Jeff) Modde, Columbus; Dale (Missy) Hans, South Sioux City; Barbara Hans, Arvada, Colo.; Rob (Lynn) Hans, Norfolk; Dan (Arlene) Hans, Lincoln; Patrick Hans, Lincoln; 20 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; sister, June (Linus) Lange, Bow Valley; brothers Charles (Jenny) Schulte, Emerson, and Marty Schulte, Yankton, S.D.; sister-in-law, Lorraine Schulte, Hartington.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Marcus “Jim” Hans, April 16, 2014, at the age of 90; brothers, Hubert “Toby” Schulte, Marvin Schulte, Harold Schulte, Leo Schulte and Roger Schulte; two sisters, Lucille Keller and Mildred Becker; son-in-law, Rick Brewer; sisters-in-law, Marcie Schulte, Rainaldes Schulte, Phyllis Schulte and Karla Schulte; brothers-in-law, Dwight Keller and Jerome Becker; and an infant son and infant daughter.
