Marvin V. Lange

FORDYCE — Marvin V. Lange, 77, Fordyce, died June 25, 2019, at Avera Sister James Nursing Home, Yankton, S.D.

Visitation and a vigil service were Thursday at Holy Family (Sts. Peter and Paul) Catholic Church, Bow Valley, and continued one hour prior to services Friday.

Mass of Christian Burial was June 28 at Holy Family (Sts. Peter and Paul) Catholic Church, with Rev. Eric Olsen officiating.

Burial was in the Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Bow Valley, with military rites provided by the Crofton American Legion Post 128 and the American Legion Riders.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Wintz Funeral Home, Hartington.

Pallbearers were Keith Stappert, John Lange, Marlen Schieffer, Gary Koch, Roger Lange, Mark Loecker and David Schulte.

Honorary pallbearers were Lynne Gurney, Cheryl Honkomp, Charlotte Arens and Ed Schulte.

Marvin Virgil Lange was born May 1, 1942, to Theresa (Kleinschmit) and Edward Lange Sr. on the family farm in Fordyce. He grew up on the farm and went to grade school at District 108 country school. Marvin attended high school for two years in Fordyce and graduated from Holy Trinity High School in 1960. He was drafted into the United States Army Infantry Division during the Vietnam War and served in Vietnam from July 1965-March 1966. He worked for Gerry Miller Implement for two years and then began farming full time. Marvin married Evelyn F. Zitka April 15, 1972, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Tabor, S.D. They continued farming until Marvin’s health prevented him from continuing. He grew grain, raised livestock, and had dairy cattle. He loved to farm, dance, play cards, listen to polka music, and spend time with family and friends.

Marvin was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church and served on the parish council, Catholic Order of Foresters, Knights of Columbus, Bow Valley Park Association, Hartington VFW Post 5283, Crofton American Legion Post 128, Center for Rural Affairs, NFO, and various other organizations.

Marvin is survived by his wife, Evelyn, Fordyce; five children, Michael (Lisa) Lange, Mission Hill, S.D.; Terry Lange, Fordyce; Doug Lange, Norfolk; Karen Lange, Omaha; and Lisa Olnes, Yankton, S.D.; six grandchildren, Trevor and Tyler Lange, Isaac, Luke, Timothy, and Maria Olnes; two sisters, Colette (Jerry) Koch, Fordyce, and Jeannie Schieffer, Crofton; two brothers, Linus (June) Lange, Bow Valley, and Edward Jr. (Bernadette) Lange, Hartington; as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Rainaldes (Harold) Schulte, Sylvia (Leander) Loecker, Theresa (James) Stappert, Sr. Dianne Lange OSB; brother-in-law, Loren Schieffer; and four nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to local Catholic schools.
