Marvin D. Ellyson

LAUREL — Marvin D. Ellyson, 83, Laurel, died Sept. 14, 2019, at the Select Specialty Hospital, Sioux Falls, S.D.

Memorial services will be Oct. 12, at 11 a.m., at the Church of All Nations, Sioux City, Iowa, with the Rev. Martha Anderson officiating.

Burial of his cremated remains will be at the Laurel Cemetery, with military rites by the Laurel VFW at a later date.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.

Marvin Duane Ellyson was born June 15, 1936, in Newcastle, to William

Dexter and Grace May (Lawrence) Ellyson. He grew up in Newcastle and went into the U.S. Army at age 17 and served from March 14, 1955-March 13, 1957. He moved to Sioux City, Iowa, and married Marion Hansen May 7, 1959, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Laurel. Marvin worked at North American Manufacturing, Sioux City, as a machinist for eight years. He also worked at Concrete Pipe, Sioux City, for eight years. Marvin then worked in management at Iowa Beef for 12 years. He and Marion moved to Laurel in 1981 in order to help take care of Marion’s parents. Marvin worked for the Lumber Yard in Laurel and then for Great Dane, Wayne, for 12 years.

Marvin had a woodworking shop in downtown Laurel. He loved gardening and the outdoors.

He is survived by his wife, Marion, Laurel; daughter, Cynthia (Lonnie) Johns, Sergeant Bluff, Iowa; grandchildren, Jennifer Peterson, Dixon; Tyler Ellyson, Kearney; Marc Johns and Jessica Johns, Sergeant Bluff, Iowa; great-grandson, Kage Peterson, Randolph; former daughter-in-law, Kim (Mark) Strathman, Randolph; sister, Jane Cochran, Norfolk; brother-in-law, Gordon (Harriet) Hansen, Dixon; and many nieces and nephews.

Marvin was preceded in death by his parents, William and Grace Ellyson; son, Brian; three brothers, Lawrence, John and Louis at age 14; and a sister, Celia Hansen.
