Loretta Marie Zuerlein

SOUTH SIOUX CITY — Loretta Marie Zuerlein died Dec. 16, 2018, at Matney’s Colonial Manor, South Sioux City.

Mass of Christian Burial is 10 a.m., Dec. 21, at St. Isidore Catholic Church, Columbus.  There will be a 4 p.m. CDA Rosary followed by visitation from 4:30-6 p.m., Thursday at St. Isidore’s.  The Vigil service will begin at 6 p.m., Thursday, also at St. Isidore’s.  Visitation continues Friday morning from 9-10 a.m., at St. Isidore Church.  

Interment will follow lunch at St. Francis Cemetery, Humphrey.

Loretta Marie Zuerlein was born April 14, 1942, in Yankton, S.D., to Emery and Marian (Hoesing) Heine.  She was raised on the farm in St. Helena, and graduated from Mt. Marty High School, Yankton, S.D.  Loretta went on to attend the College of St. Mary, Omaha.  Loretta married Gerald Zuerlein July 24, 1982, in St. Helena. She taught school for 20 years.

Loretta was a member of St. Isidore Catholic Church, Christian Mothers, Catholic Daughters of America, Art Club, S.C.A., Secular Franciscans and Birthright. She was honored by the Archdiocese of Omaha as the top religious educator of that year.

Loretta is survived by her step daughter, Phyllis (Duane) Vavra, Columbus; step daughter: Karen (Kenneth) Anderson, North Platte; step son, Richard Zuerlein, Columbus; step daughter, Joan Rathjen-Davis, Columbus; step daughter, Mary (Ray) Hemmer, Humphrey; and step son, Ivan Zuerlein, Kearney; 16 step grandchildren, 14 step great-grandchildren; sister, Elaine Jaeke-Hodge, Omaha; brother, Larry (Faye) Heine, Bloomfield; sister, Janice (Reginald) Konrade, Abilene, Kan.; sister, Carolyn (Ed) Kleinschmit, Crofton; brother, Kevin Heine, Crofton; sister, Marcia (LeRoy) Goeden, Sargeant Bluff, Iowa; sister, Joan Foxhoven, Wynot; brother, Emery (Cheryl) Heine, Yankton, S.D.; brother, Brian (Janel) Heine, Fordyce; and many nieces and nephews

She is preceded in death by her husband, Gerald Zuerlein; parents, Emery and Marian Heine; grandson, Gregory Hemmer; sister Debra Anderson; and nephews, Aaron and Jeff Heine.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the wishes of the family.
