Local teachers should get vaccine soon

Posted in:

HARTINGTON — Hartington-Newcastle Supt. A.J. Johnson said he expects school staff, teachers and administrators to be able to get COVID-19 vaccinations in late January or early February.

Johnson said all school personnel have been designated as essential workers, and as such they are in the next phase of vaccinations.

“We have surveyed all the employees to find out who wanted the vaccine and who did not so we have an idea of how many people will be vaccinated,” Johnson said.

Johnson said the biggest thing now, is trying to figure out how and when the vaccinations will happen.

“We don’t know where the vaccines will be given yet, so we don’t know if the teachers and staff will have to travel for them. There are a lot of logistics to factor into these vaccinations. It may be necessary for us to have to let the kids out of school early on a day like that,” Johnson said. “The unfortunate thing is we might not know until just a couple days before it happens as to when the vaccinations will take place,”

Johnson said he is staying in constant contact with the State, and local Health District, as well as with area school superintendents in order to stay abreast of vaccination plans.

The first Nebraskans to get the vaccine included front line health care workers and residents and staff of longterm care facilities, as well as paramedics, emergency medical technicians, and those who will be vaccinating priority groups in the coming months.

Besides essential workers, people over the age of 75 will also be in line to get the vaccine once the first phase of vaccinations is complete.

He is encouraged that some headway is being made in the fight against the virus and this will help keep schools open.

“The risk dial in our area is improving. I think it’s just being confirmed that it is not spreading in schools and this gives us more and more hope that we can continue to be in school and do the things we need to do here to educate the students.”
