Local gymnasts begin 2021 competition season

MITCHELL, S.D. — Local gymnasts Lauren Potts, 13, Hartington; and Julia Johnson, 14, Laurel, began their 2021 gymnastics season Jan. 2, with their first competition in Mitchell, S.D.

The gymnasts competed against a total of 19 girls in their division, Xcel Platinum, in all four events, including beam, bars, floor and vault. Gymnasts can place in each of the individual events as well as receive an all-around score.

Potts received second place in allaround, and Johnson received fourth place.

The gymnasts are members of Flippers Gymnastics based in Crofton. They compete in competitions across Nebraska, Iowa, and South Dakota each spring. Their coach, Sarah Peterson, has operated the gym for the past ten years.

Lauren is the daughter of Tom and Robin Potts, Hartington, and the granddaughter of Alton and Sharon Heimes, Hartington, and the late Jim and Leona Potts, Hartington.

Julia is the daughter of Joel and Angela Johnson, Laurel; and is the granddaughter of Darell and Joyce Thoene, Hartington, and Jerry and Glenda Johnson, Laurel.

Maleah Heimes, 10, Wynot, also competed Jan. 2 in Mitchell, with Xcel Gold.

Gymnasts compete in all four events, including beam, bars, floor and vault, with Heimes placing second in allaround.

Heimes is the daughter of Lee and Joan Heimes, Wynot, and granddaughter of Bob and Deb Clarkson, Concord, and Roman and Janice Heimes, Wynot.
