Leonard Anthony Feilmeier

Posted in:

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — Leonard Anthony Feilmeier, 87, Minneapolis, Minn., formerly Hartington, died of complications from COVID Dec. 30, 2020, with his two daughters, Debbie and Mary Len, by his side.

Leonard’s family is planning a Celebration of Life this summer in Hartington once it is safe for family and friends to gather.

Burial will be at St. Michael’s Cemetery, Hartington.

Leonard was born Oct. 13, 1933, in Hartington, to John and Wilhelmina (Wieseler) Feilmeier. He grew up in Hartington, graduating from Holy Trinity High School in 1952. Leonard’s mother died when he was 8, and in time, Adeline Sudbeck joined the family and married John. He spoke often and fondly of his family of 16 siblings.

He was always willing to accept a challenge and with that came new opportunities and new places to live. After two years in the Army, he moved to Wyoming where he met the love of his life, Mary Lou Stroh, and they married in 1955. Together with their two daughters they lived in Wyoming, Montana, Wisconsin and Minnesota. After retiring from a long career at Ashland Oil-SuperAmerica, Leonard and Mary Lou bought a second home in Arizona and enjoyed many winter seasons as snowbirds.

Leonard was always known to tinker with something and was quite accomplished with woodworking. He was especially proud of the cradle he made his only granddaughter. Leonard also enjoyed horses and as an accomplished horseman, would take part in many long trail rides both from his home in Tucson, Ariz., and in Hastings, Minn. He was involved in several riding groups and had many stories to share. Always the adventurer, he travelled to Nepal with Debbie; Great Britain with Mary Len and her family; and later rafted the Grand Canyon. He liked everyone to know he was the oldest one to make the trip. Leonard’s motto was Life is Good.

Leonard is survived by his two daughters and their spouses and one very special granddaughter and her husband, Debra (Robert) Fjetland, Welch, Minn.; Mary Len (Mark) Mathiowetz, Littleton, Colo.; and Britta (Mark) Huebsch, Lakewood, Colo.; four brothers, George Feilmeier, Yankton, S.D.; Jerome Feilmeier, Hartington; Harry (Mary Gay) Feilmeier, Hartington; Chuck (Bev) Feilmeier, Hartington; and seven sisters, Wilhelmina Boecker, Bloomfield; Ann (Jay) Walz, Arizona; Agnes Hochstein, St. Helena; Alice Klug, Hartington; Charleen (Dennis) Meyer, Syracuse, Mo.; Ruth Heine, Bow Valley; and Linda (Dale) Trenhaile, Yankton, S.D.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John, Wilhelmina and Adeline Feilmeier; his beautiful wife, Mary Lou, and his second wife, Carolyn; his infant son, Scott Anthony Feilmeier; siblings, John Feilmeier, Mary Jansen, Sally Promes and Leona (Potts) Peterson; sisters-in-law, Rosemary Feilmeier, Loraine Feilmeier and Eleanor Feilmeier; brothersin-law, Leonard Jansen, Herbert Boecker, Donald Klug, Jim Potts, Daryl Hochstein, Richard Heine and Jerome Promes.

Leonard’s family prefers memorials be made to the Alzheimer’s association or to families in your communities struck by COVID.
