Posted in:

CREIGHTON — The Laurel-Concord-Coleridge track-and-field season got underway on April 2 when it competed in the Knox County Invitational in Creighton, with the Bears finishing seventh as a team and the Lady Bears coming in fifth.

Bloomfield won the boys’ division of the gathering with 120 points while Niobrara/Verdigre was the girls’ champion with 139.5. Crofton was second in the boys’ scoring with 82 points and the Queen Bees were runners-up with 86.33.

The Bears tallied 41 points and the Lady Bears scored 50.33.

“We had a good day on the track,” Laurel-Concord- Coleridge coach Shannon Benson said. “We were able to set some good starting marks for our season. We have some great leadership equaled with talented underclassmen that will help us grow the program.”

Tali Erwin led the Lady Bears with a title in the high jump after clearing the bar at 5 feet, 2 inches, a second in the 300 hurdles and a fourth in the 100 hurdles. She also joined Carlie Kvols, Hattie Mc-Corkindale and Brynlee Stanley in the 400-meter relay, in which the group placed fifth.

Faith Galvin had a successful outing, placing second in the 3,200 and fifth in the 1,600 as well as running in the 3,200-meter relay along with Abbie Brummels, Justice Olson and Tyler Recob to place third.

Kvols placed fourth in the 400 while Olson was sixth in the 3,200.

Laney Folkers was fifth in the triple jump and ran in the 1,600-meter relay with Recob, McCorkindale and Kvols, in which they placed fourth.

Preston Rose and Tyler Olson led the LCC effort on the boys’ side of the meet.

Rose won the 200 and placed fourth in the 100. Olson won the 3,200-meter run and placed third in the 1,600.

Olson and Rose combined with Shane Langford and Carter Kvols to take third in the 3,200 relay while Kvols placed fifth in the 800 individually and Olson placed sixth in the discus.

Langford, Luke Jackson, Hunter Benson and Tyler Boysen circled the track four times in the 1,600 relay and placed fifth.

“Our juniors and seniors stepped up and showed our underclassmen what it takes to work hard and showed them what happens when you do work hard,” Benson said. “Our team is smaller than we’ve had in the past so we have a lot of events kids will be trying as the season goes on. It will be fun to watch where/what events the kids call ‘theirs.’” Both teams were set to compete in the Wayne Invitational on April 9 before heading to Homer for the Homer Invitational on April 11.

Laurel-Concord-Coleridge will host its own invitational on April 16.
