LCC tops Cedar in a battle of state-rated teams

LAUREL — A battle between two of the best teams in Northeast Nebraska — state-rated Cedar Catholic and Laurel-Concord-Coleridge — turned out to be a showcase for an All Stater.

LCC’s Noah Schutte took the game over, setting the nets on fire for 40 points, as the Bears defeated Cedar 77-59.

Cedar Catholic coach Matt Steffen knew Schutte could be trouble. He prepared a special defense to try and stop him, but to no avail.

The LCC Bears shot the ball extremely well.

Schutte was simply unstoppable, hitting 12-of-15 from the field and 14-of-16 from the line, to put up a career-best 40 points in helping the Bears to the win.

The Bears got out to a six-point lead, 20-14, in the first frame. Cedar was led in the opening minutes by Tate Thoene’s two buckets and two freethrows.

The visiting Trojans came back in the second frame. outscoring the Bears 15-14.

Myles Thoene got hot from long distance in the second quarter, hitting two from downtown. He also hit for two free throws in the frame to lead Cedar with eight points.

The Bears kept the pedal down in the second half, earning a 43-30 scoring advantage to seal the win.

Schutte was scoring at will throughout the game, and with Ty Erwin adding 14 points and Evan Haisch putting in 13, the Bears were able to pull away in the fourth quarter to pick up the win.

Evan Schmitt added six points and Cael Hartung put up four in the win. Schutte had a double-double with 14 rebounds and added three assists. Hartung had five boards, Schmitt had five assists and Erwin had three assists.

Cedar was led on the night by Myles Thoene, who dropped in 19 points. He was one of four double-figure scorers for Cedar.

Brady Steffen connected for 13 points in the contest, while Tate Thoene and Charlie Schroeder both hit for 11 points.

Schroeder and Steffen both ended the contest with doubledoubles, as Schroeder yanked down 13 rebounds and Steffen cleaned the glass for 11.
