LCC Lego teams compete at State event in Lincoln

LINCOLN — On March 15 and 16, the Laurel-Concord-Coleridge Middle School Lego League teams competed at the new State event at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

On Friday, the two teams gave their innovation project speeches about trying to increase the popularity of a particular hobby.

“Board in Pair-a-dice” gave their speech on the newly formed game club at LCC, where each month, the team hosts a game club in the high school commons.

Then the other team “Some Assembly Required” presented their speech on the model building kits they had formed. Both teams also presented the robots they built for Saturday’s competition and answered questions from the panel of judges.

The rest of Friday was spent going to career exploration events hosted by companies around campus.

Saturday was devoted to the robot table; with opening ceremonies, multiple practice rounds, and three official matches. The teams competed against over 70 teams from across the state. Both teams worked all day trying to perfect the codes they had worked on all year. Both teams ended the day in the top half of the robot competition with SAR (Some Assembly Required) getting a best score of 300, placing them 7 in the competition and BIP (Board in Paira- dice) scoring 215 and ending up 31st in the state. They ended the day with a giant dance party and awards ceremony.

Students and coaches had a great weekend experiencing, and learning, and having fun with all the other Lego League teams from the state.

“We as coaches can see how much of an impact it can have in many areas, from public speaking to working together as a team, and other skills such as coding and working with new and innovative technology,” said Coach Mark Leonard.
