Late surge lifts Cedar into title game

Posted in:

PONCA - It was a nice night for basketball Tuesday night, as the top seeded Cedar Catholic Lady Trojans squared off against the Lady Bulldogs from Creighton in opening round action of the D1-3 girls SubDistrict tournament.

The Lady Trojans, donning their signature full court press, were in the driver’s seat early on in the game forcing eight Bulldog turnovers.  The Trojan defense, led by freshmen Makenna Noecker, held Creighton to just six first quarter points, while putting up 13 of their own giving Cedar the seven-point lead after the first period of play.

The second quarter saw both teams dialing it in on offense.  With just under five minutes left in the half, Noecker and Brynn Wortmann, who together tallied three consecutive 3-pointers, would relinquish a Bulldog 3-pointer off of a missed freethrow attempt cutting Cedar's lead to two points.  The lead would soon disintegrate at the hands of Charlize Wilmes and Thersa Corn, who would give Creighton the two-point advantage at the two-minute warning mark.  Both teams battled back and forth before eventually settling for a stalemate going into halftime tied up.

Second half belonged to the Lady Trojans.
The full court press, and stifling defense from Noecker, who recorded three of her nine steals in just over three minutes in the third quarter, allowed only three points from Creighton in the third period.  The Lady Trojans were making a living off of second-chance shots, and used solid defensive pressure to overwhelm Creighton’s offense, and walk off of the court after the buzzer a 57-43 victor.

Leading the way for Cedar Catholic was Noecker who knocked down a game high 20 points followed closely by (Brynn) Wortmann with 16, and Aiden Wortmann with 11.  Rounding out the scoring for the Lady Trojans was Abby Hochstein with 9 and Laney Kathol with 1.

The Lady Trojans will face their cross town rival, Hartington-Newcastle on Thursday night in Ponca for the Sub-District title.

cefar will now take on Hartington-Newcastle Thursday in the title game.
