Late rally lifts Bees over Blue Devils

Posted in:

BLOOMFIELD — The Wynot Blue Devils hung in there for three quarters of play on Friday against the tough Bloomfield Bees.

Bloomfield would score a pair of late touchdowns to pull away for the 38-18 win.

Bloomfield was led by the hard running of senior back Cody Bruegman who rushed for 231 yards on 35 carries and by Wiley Ziegler who had nine catches for 53 yards plus a punt return for another score.

Wynot’s offense was led by Carson Wieseler with 10 catches for 131 yards and by Dylan Heine who threw for 202 yards.

The Blue Devil defense was paced by Tate Guenther with 19 tackles and Zack Foxhoven with 12 tackles. Jake Hochstein also had a fumble recovery.

The Bees defense was led by Wiley Ziegler with 12 tackles plus an interception. Ian Kuchar and Logan Doerr each recorded seven stops on the night and Cody Bruegman also had an interception for Bloomfield.

It did not take long for the Bees to get on the scoreboard. After an opening three-and-out by the Blue Devils, Wiley Ziegler took the ensueing punt and raced 42 yards for a Bloomfield touchdown. The PAT failed as the Bees led 6-0.

Wynot answered at the 8:10 mark after a 32-yard catch and run by Carson Wieseler. The Blue Devils’ Dylan Heine then hooked up again with Wieseler on an 11-yard touchdown toss. The PAT kick failed and the score was tied at 6-6.

After a change of possessions the Bees mounted a scoring drive with Cody Bruegman providing most of the ground yardage. The team was also aided by a 24-yard catch for a key first down by Wiley Ziegler as Bloomfield threatened again.

They capped the drive on a five-yard play-action pass to Layne Warrior for the touchdown. The PAT run was stuffed as the Bees led 12-6.

Late in the opening quarter Wynot was again threatening.

Helped by an 11-yard catch and run by Carson Wieseler and a big 32-yard grab by Charlie Schroeder, the Devils were deep in Bloomfield territory as the quarter ended. Wynot’s hopes ended with a Cody Bruegman interception in the endzone to start the second quarter.

The Wynot defense would stiffen on the Bees next possession. Back to back sacks by Tyler Nicke and James Collins forced the Bees to punt.

Wynot then moved quickly downfield with a seven-yard catch by Colin Wieseler and a 15-yard catch and run by Carson Wieseler. A pass interference call on the Bees put the ball inside the five-yard line and Dylan Heine capped the drive with a twoyard sneak for the score. The PAT kick was wide left and the score was knotted at 12-12.

The Bees would mount another scoring drive late in the half. A pair of first down runs by Cody Bruegman and first down catches of 7 and 10 yards by Layne Warrior set up a 2 yard touchdown run over the left side by Braeden Guenther. The PAT run was no good and Bloomfield held an 18-12 halftime lead.

The Bloomfield received the kickoff to open the second half and behind the hard running of Cody Bruegman and a key 14 yard catch on a 4th down by Wiley Ziegler moved the ball into the Blue Devils red zone. The Bee capped the drive on a 15 yard sweep around the right side by Bruegman for the score. Braeden Buenther pushed the middle for the PAT run and Bloomfield’s lead increased to 26-18.

Wynot would answer on their next series. Their drive was helped by a 32-yard catch by Carson Wieseler on a deep crossing pattern and finished off with a 4 yard touchdown pass from Dylan Heine to Colin Wieseler. The PAT pass was too high but the Blue Devils had cut the Bees lead back to 26-18 by the end of the third period of play.

In the fourth quarter the Bees opening drive stalled out on a sack by the Blue Devils Charlie Schroeder. Wynot was not able to move the ball and were forced to punt giving the Bees good field position at the 32 yard line.

From there the Bees moved the ball down field, over came a bad snap on one play and recovered their own fumble on another. A 12-yard reception by Layne Warrior gave the Bees the ball at the 9-yard line. Two plays later, Cody Bruegman powered in over the right side from four yards out for his second touchdown of the night. The PAT failed but Bloomfield had opened up some breathing roon leading 32-18.

At the 3:00 minute mark Bloomfield would tack on their final score of the night with Cody Bruegman picking up 45 yards as he carried the ball seven straight times. His final carry was a six-yard sweep around the right side for his third touchdown of the night, making it 38- 18 in favor of Bloomfield.

The Blue Devils are on the road next Friday when they travel to Homer to play the Knights. Bloomfield is also on the road at Allen.
