Larry Don Maxon

LAUREL — Larry Don Maxon, 86, Laurel, died Dec. 4, 2018, at his residence in rural Laurel, surrounded by family when he went home to be with Jesus and Norma.

Visitation and a prayer service were Friday at United Lutheran Church, Laurel, and continued Saturday one hour prior to services.

Funeral Services were Dec. 8, at United Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Mathew Quanbeck officiating. Burial was at the Laurel cemetery with military rites by the Laurel Veterans Post #4504 and #54.

Pallbearers were Justin Dalton, Derek Dalton, Nate Maxon, Tanner Maxon, Matthew Maxon, Blake Maxon and Gene Meyer.

Honorary pallbearers were his granddaughters, Eva Carson, Amada Van Kley, Leah Guenther, Danae Wieking, Ashley Tiahrt, Kylie Maxon, Katie Maxon and Lorna Maxon.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Wintz Funeral Home, Laurel.

Larry Don Maxon was born May 8, 1932, to Floyd and Johanna (Pedersen) Maxon. Larry and his twin sister, Reba, weighed less than 5 lbs. combined at birth and spent their first days of life in a shoebox being warmed in the oven. Larry attended a one-room school house near Laurel. His family moved to Wisner in 1947, and he graduated from Wisner High School in 1951. He later served in the U.S. Army from 1953-1954. Larry married Norma Rae Ott, Beemer. Larry returned to Laurel with his new bride where they farmed southwest of town.

Larry was a jokester and loved to make people laugh. He had a love for horses and his favorite mule, Ringo. Larry enjoyed people and was always cheering for the underdog. Christ became real to Larry at a Via de Cristo weekend in the early 1980s. He was active in the local VFW, Gideon’s, and taught Sunday school for years. Larry loved his wife Norma and his family. He enjoyed farming and was often seen on his gator checking the fields, until the very end.

Larry is survived by four sons and one daughter, Roger (Terri) Maxon, Ashland; Kathleen (Bill) Dalton, Le Mars, Iowa; Jerry Maxon, Laurel; Glen (Nancy) Maxon, Laurel; Clark (Penny) Maxon, Laurel; 13 grandchildren, Eva (Tyler) Carson, Nate Maxon, Leah (Adam) Guenther, Justin (Ann) Dalton, Derek Dalton, Amanda (Kurt) Van Kley, Danae (Brett) Wieking, Ashley (John) Tiahrt, Tanner Maxon, Matthew Maxon & fiance Kiley Thompson, Kylie, Katie and Lorna Maxon; 15 great-grandchildren; one sister, Maxine Wegner, Red Oak, Texas; one sister-in-law, Twyla Lindsay, Wayne; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Norma; brother, John Maxon; sister, Ramona, and her husbands, Chuck Meyer and Vic Greenly; sisters, Valdorine Maxon and twin sister Reba (George) Maloney; and brother-in-law, Ottlin Wegner.
