Lady Trojans still trying to find their groove

HARTINGTON - The Cedar Catholic Lady Trojan basketball team is in the middle of a threegame skid which left them 2-5 on the young season with losses to Crofton and West Holt this past week.

Crofton defeated the Lady Trojans 58-44 back on Dec. 12 and West Holt won 44-34 on Dec. 15, both games were played at the Msgr. Werner Activities Center in Hartington.

Against West Holt, the teams played even through the first quarter, heading into the second eight minute session tied 11-11.

Cedar Catholic was outscored 13-5 in the second period to trail by eight heading into the second half.

The Lady Huskies added six points to the advantage in the third frame before the the Lady Trojans responded in the final period nibbling four points off of the lead, but fell by the 10-point margin.

Addison Walter paced the Cedar Catholic offense with 15 points, Lauren Bernecker added five and Katy Jones tacked on four.

Walter also pulled down seven rebounds, Jones and Anisten Wortmann had five boards apiece.

Jones and Walter handed out two assists each while Jones and Samantha Pick each had three steals.

Earlier last week, the Lady Trojans were beaten by undefeated Crofton, 58-44.

Cedar Catholic trailed from the beginning with the Lady Warriors sprinting to a 10-point lead in the first quarter.

The Lady Trojans battled back in the second eight minutes and the teams went to the halftime break with Crofton in front 29-23.

The third quarter sealed the Lady Trojan’s fate as the Lady Warriors outscored them 19-11 then held on for the 14-point win.

Grace Wortmann paced Cedar Catholic with 14 points in the contest on 6-for-9 shooting from the field. Anisten Wortmann added seven points. Pick and Walter each tossed in five.

Katelyn Arens and Bernecker each grabbed five missed shots, Jones handed out three assists.

Cedar Catholic was set to close out the pre-holiday portion of its schedule with home date against Dakota Valley out of McCook Lake, S.D., on Dec. 19.

The Lady Trojans will be in the Wayne Holiday Tournament after the moratorium on Dec. 28-Dec. 30.
