Lady Trojans move to 9-9 on the season
HARTINGTON — A busy week saw the Cedar Catholic High School volleyball team split four matches and move to 9-9 as the season entered its final month.
The Lady Trojans fell in five sets to state-rated Norfolk Catholic in a thriller at the Msgr. Werner Activity Center last Tuesday before going 2-1 over the weekend in Stanton Tournament play.
The team is starting to peak, Coach Denae Buss said.
“This week we have really started to play much more aggressively,” Buss said. “I know we went 2-2 but we are keeping up with everyone we play now. We had a few key injuries throughout our team that hurt a little bit, but everyone stepped up nicely and the team was able to push on with more wins.”
In the defeat against Norfolk Catholic (25-18, 17-25, 18-25, 25-18, 15-10), Brynn Wortmann (14 kills, three aces, nine digs), Makenna Noecker (14 kills, 10 digs), Brooklyn Kuehn (four blocks), Cady Uttecht (22 assists) and Megan Heimes (16 digs) led the way.
The Lady Trojans defeated Arlington 2-1 (23-25, 25-18, 26-24) and Ponca 2-0 (25- 17, 25-17) at Stanton and fell to Clarkson- Leigh 2-0 (25-23, 25-17).
One big highlight of the week is senior Megan Heimes breaking the 1,000-dig total for a career recently and adding on to her tally.
“Megan has worked so hard on the sport, and really everything that she does,” Coach Buss said.
The Lady Trojans continue their season Thursday with a triangular at O’Neill where they will face off with the hosts and Wayne. They played at Pierce Tuesday.
“We need to continue to work on our consistency in the serving, hitting and serve receive, but I am so proud of how aggressively we are playing right now,” Buss said. “With Covid, we have been lucky enough to not have any pauses in our season so far and I think the athletes have adjusted quite well.”
