Lady Trojans fall against Ponca

Posted in:

PONCA — The Cedar Catholic Lady Trojans varsity basketball team headed to Ponca Tuesday night for a nonconference grudge match against the C2 eighth ranked Lady Indians.

The much younger and wellconditioned Trojan squad looked every bit up to the challenge presented to them by a Ponca team that entered the matchup with only two losses on the season.

“They are a very well coached team,” said Trojan head coach Craig Wortmann. “We know what they’re going to do, discipline is a huge factor, and to hang with a team of this caliber you have to put together four complete quarters.”

It was a very evenly matched affair through the first quarter. The Indians turned up the pressure right out of the gates with a stifling full-court press that coach Wortmann’s team had little trouble deciphering. Through solid defensive play from both sides, the first quarter came to an end with a 10-9 score in favor of Ponca.

The fast-paced action spilled over into the second quarter, fueled by a pair of 3-pointers at the hands of freshman Mckenna Noecker and junior Brynn Wortmann. The Cedar defense held Ponca in check during the second quarter, allowing just 10 more points while compiling six more of their own, wearing a 20-15 deficit into the half.

Ponca came rip-roaring out of the gates after the break to start the third quarter, with help from sharp shooting senior Kaci Day who accounted for six of her game-high 21 points.

“There were times in the third quarter where we struggled a little on defense, allowing the lead to increase too much, making it difficult to come back from.” Coach Wortmann said, as his team was outscored 16-10 in the third.

Heading into the final frame of play and trailing by 11 points, the girls fought tooth and nail, clawing their way back into the game against an unrelenting Indians defense as they managed to tack on 12 additional points before finally succumbing to the 50-37 loss.

The leading point gatherers for the Lady Trojans were Noecker and Wortmann who scored 13 and 12 points.
