Lady Trojan golfers place third, seventh in back-to-back meets

Posted in:

WAYNE — The Cedar Catholic Lady Trojans golf team has positioned themselves for a run at qualifying for the State tournament with a couple of top-seven team finishes in recent tournaments.

The Lady Trojans finished third in the Mid-State Conference Tournament and seventh in the Richard Metteer Invitational at Wayne Country Club.

“We will have a lot of the same teams in districts that we’ve played against all fall,” Cedar Catholic coach Sheila Jueden said. “If we show up and play well, we could get the entire team down there.”

“Down there” is the 2023 Nebraska State Girls Golf Championship at Lake Maloney Golf Club in North Platte.

Maci Schommer was the lone qualifier last season, but would love some company as the Lady Trojans look to get the entire team out west.

“That would be great,” Schommer said after the Metteer Invite. “Having the whole team there would be great for my senior season and great for Cedar Catholic golf.”

Jueden agreed. “It would be great to get the team down there,” Jueden said. “The girls have been working hard, and we’ll see what happens. I like the team we have.”

Well, honestly, even in the Mid-State Conference Tournament, the Lady Trojans trailed Wayne by 54 strokes and O’Neill by 43, and in the Wayne tournament, they shot 435, which was behind six other teams and 27 shots out of seventh.

“We’re going to have to play well to get the team to State, but if the girls come in with the right attitude, we have the ability to make it,” Jueden said. “It will be up to them.”

In the Metteer Invite, Wayne won the team title with 365 strokes, Scotus Central Catholic was second with 372 and O’Neill tied West Holt for third 10 shots behind the Lady Irish.

Schommer was the top Cedar Catholic finisher at 19th.

“My goal is to return to State,” Schommer said. “It would be great to take all of my teammates with me — we’ve had a lot of fun this season.”

Olivia Kleinschmit used a 103 to place 23rd, Kristine Becker was 35th at 110 and Kate Lammers ended up 50th at 123.

In the Mid-State Conference meet, Schommer finished in the medals after carding a 103 to finish in a tie for ninth and 10th, but won a scorecard playoff with Keria Hestekind of O’Neill.

Tessa Haahr finished 15th at 109 for the Lady Trojans and teammate Mya Dickes, also at 109, was 16th.

Kleinschmit ended up 20th with a 112, Becker was 30th with a 124, Lammers was 34th with a 130, Maggie Dendinger was 35th at 130 and Samantha Pick shot a 144 to finish 42nd.

The District meet, which was scheduled for Oct. 3 back at Wayne Country Club, was postponed to Oct. 4 due to impending weather conditions.

The Class C State meet is set to go at Lake Maloney Oct. 9-10.
