Lady Devils win defensive battle

HARTINGTON — The Wynot Lady Blue Devils successfully defended their Classic Tournament title here Friday.

Wynot downed the Hartington-Newcastle Lady Wildcats, 41-35, to claim the title.

Wynot opened up a lead in the third quarter with an 18-9 run, and withstood a 15-8 comeback attempt in the fourth quarter by the Lady Wildcats to come away with the hard fought win.

Wynot got double-figure scoring from Katelyn Heine with 12 points and 11 points from Michaela Lange.

The Lady Blue Devils also had a 7-4 advantage from 3-point range for the game.

Hartington-Newcastle was paced by Abbe Morten, who connected for a gamehigh 16 points, and got 3-pointers from Keanna Korth and Alivia Morten.

The Lady Wildcats also went 7-10 from the line, while Wynot only hit 4-15 charity tosses.

In the first quarter, Wynot got five points from Michaela Lange and a bucket by Noelle Wieseler. Hartington-Newcastle got five points from Abbe Morten and a trey by Alivia Morten, as the Lady Wildcats clung to an 8-7 early lead.

In the second quarter, Wynot’s defense held the Wildcats to a single field goal by Keanna Korth and some free throws.

Meanwhile, the Lady Devils got a trey by Michaela Lange and a basket each from Katelyn Heine and Noelle Wieseler, as they took an 15-11 advantage into the locker room at halftime.

In the third quarter, the Lady Blue Devils starting hitting from long range as they got a pair of 3-pointers from Katelyn Heine, and Michaela Lange’s third trey of the night. Autumn Lawson and Emersyn Sudbeck each drove the lane for a bucket, as Wynot increased their lead to 35-20 going into the final period. Keanna Korth hit a 3-pointer and a conventional two to lead the Wildcats.

Hartington-Newcastle would try to rally in the fourth quarter behind their scoring leader Abbe Morten. Morten dumped in eight points, Kayden Jueden hit twice in the paint area and Makenna Clarkson drained a 3-pointer. Wynot countered with a 3-pointer each by Katelyn Heine and Emersyn Sudbeck as they fought off the comeback attempt and took home the travelling plaque with the 41-35 win.
