Lady Devils open 2019-20 with a pair of wins

Posted in:

WYNOT — Wynot began the season with a veteran squad that aims to make a run at another state title.

The Lady Devils seemed to be right on track for that goal as they opened the season with a pair of lopsided wins.

On Thursday, Wynot easily dispatched Bloomfield to earn a 67-27 win, and then Friday they had little trouble taking care of business against the Winside Wildcats, 71-16.

In Thursday’s game at Bloomfield, the Blue Devils got double-figure scoring from Shaelee Planer and Katelyn Heine, with 12 points each. Michaela Lange and Whitney Hochstein each contributed eight points a piece as 12 players would enter the scoring column for Wynot.

Bloomfield’s one bright spot was Alexandra Eisenhower who took scoring honors for the game with her 15 points.

Wynot started out fast in this game. A pair of threes by Katelyn Heine and one each by Shaelee Planer and Autumn Lawson fueled a big push to give Wynot an early first quarter 26-6 lead.

The pace did not slow in the second quarter. The Queen Bees got five points from Alexandra Eisenhower and a pair of buckets from Katie Burnes. Wynot countered with a pair of treys by Michaela Lange, one each by Emersyn Sudbeck and Kaitlyn Heimes, and four points by Shaelee Planer, as they expanded their lead to 43-17 at halftime.

Scoring fell off drastically in the third quarter as Bloomfield could only manage a pair of free throws and Wynot had a lone bucket by Shaelee Planer

and some free throws to make the score 48-19 after three periods.

Bloomfield would score eight points in the fourth quarter and Wynot had nine points. The Bees got treys from Alexandra Eisenhower and Christina Martinson. While Wynot got a long range 3-pointer from Chloe Heimes as Wynot moved to 2-0 with the 67-27 win.

On Friday night, the Wynot Lady Devils hosted the Winside Lady Wildcats, dominating the visitors on both ends of the court to roll over the young Lady Wildcat squad, 71-16.

Wynot was led by Katelyn Heine with 13 points and Shaelee Planer with 12 points.

Twins, Emersyn and Edyn Sudbeck, were a dual threat scoring eight and seven points respectively, to help lead a balanced attack. Chloe Heimes also drained a 3-pointer to help the Lady Devils’ cause.

Winside was paced by Jackie Estalante who had 13 of Winside’s total 16 points for the game.

Wynot’s relentless full court pressure got the Lady Devils off to another quick start in this game. Turnovers by the Lady Wildcats against the Blue Devil press lead to many transition baskets. Katelyn Heine hit a pair of 3-pointers and Shaelee Planer hit for seven points in the first quarter.

Autumn Lawson and Edyn Sudbeck each also hit from long range, as Wynot built a 31-2 first quarter lead.

Jackie Escalante would show up in the second quarter and hit for seven points for the Lady Wildcats. Shaelee Planer rained in her second trey of the night, and balanced scoring helped the Lady Devils build on their lead to make the score 47-9 at halftime.

Jackie Escalante hit two more buckets to add to her totals in the third quarter for the Lady Cats. Wynot however was rolling as they went on a 16-4 run lead by four points each from Edyn Sudbeck and Michaela Lange and four other players would enter the scoring column to make the score 65-13 at the end of three periods of play.

Chloe Heimes hit a trey and Krystal Sudbeck had a lay-in as reserves mopped up the fourth quarter and Wynot moved to 2-0 with the 71-16 win.

Wynot will have a tough non-conference game Thursday when they host the West Point Guardian Angels and then take on Osmond Friday in Lewis and Clark action.
