Lady Devils need double OT to slip past Ponca

LAUREL — The Wynot Lady Blue Devils went into the Conference Tournament as the number two seed and that matched them up against the seventh-seeded Ponca Lady Indians in a game that was moved to Laurel due to the school fire at Wynot.

The game turned out to be a real dogfight as it went into double overtime before the Lady Blue Devils came away with the 43-41 win.

Both offenses struggle at times in this game but that is what usually happens when these two veteran coaches meet.

Wynot was led by seniors Kinslee Heimes with 13 points and Kayla Pinkelman with 12 points. Kenna Oglimueller contributed with eight points and eight rebounds.

Ponca was led by Alix Hughes, who hit a trio of three-pointers to earn top scoring honors for the game with 15 points.

Lily Korth also hit double figures for the Lady Indians as she finished with 10 points. Emerson Ehlers had eight points and eight boards. Both teams would struggle offensively in the first quarter. Wynot got four points from Kinslee Heimes and a bucket on the inside by Kenna Oligmueller. All the Lady Indians could manage was a bucket plus one by Lily Korth as Wynot led 8-3 at the end of the first quarter.

In the second period Wynot got threepointers from Myrah Sudbeck, Kinslee Heimes and Kayla Pinkelman. Ponca went on a 15-9 run, led by four points each by Alix Hughes and Emerson Ehlers and a three-pointer by Lily Korth as they took an 18-17 halftime lead.

The third quarter saw Wynot go inside with five points from Kayla Pinkelman and four points from Kenna Oligmueller, all coming in the paint. Ponca countered from the outside with a threepointers each by Alix Hughes and Lily Korth as the Blue Devils clung to a 26-24 lead.

With Wynot’s point guard Kinslee Heimes in foul trouble Blue Devil Coach Steve Wieseler was forced to rotate her in and out on offense. The Lady Blue Devils offense could only manage a bucket each by Eliza Lange and Kinslee Heimes.

Ponca got a three-pointer by Alix Hughes and a clutch pair of freethrows by Elsie Keller to send the game into overtime tied at 30-30.

The first overtime saw Alix Huges scoring as she hit her third trey of night and score five points for the Lady Indians Wynot got a layup each from Allison Wieseler and a bucket plus-one by Kinslee Heimes as the game stayed tied at 35-35 and went into a second overtime. In the second extra period Ponca got four points by Emerson Ehlers and another basket from Alix Hughes. Wynot got a basket and a pair of freethrows by Kayla Pinkelman along with a layup by Kenna Oligmueller.

Ponca missed their final attempt and Wynot advanced into the next round to take on Laurel Concord-Coleridge on Tuesday.
