Lady Devils come out on the short end of battle with Irish

Posted in:

LINCOLN—The Wynot Lady Blue Devils and the Falls City Sacred Heart Lady Irish seem to butt heads at the State Basketball Championships on a regular basis over the years.

In the 2021 version it was no different.

This game was a very low scoring affair for the first three quarters, but the Lady Irish heated up offensively in the fourth quarter as they pulled away for the 41-27 win.

Wynot gave the Lady Irish too many secondchance baskets off of offensive rebounds and struggled from the free throw line hitting only 5 of 15 tosses to give themselves a chance to win.

Wynot was led by Karley Heimes who got seven of her nine points in the first half. Edyn Sudbeck and Autumn Lawson finished with seven and six

Falls City Sacred Heart got a big 17 points from Erison Vonderschmitt and 13 points from Olivia Eickhoff. Delanie Witt played a big part in the final quarter as she went 8-9 from the free throw line in the period.

Both teams got off to a very sluggish start.

Wynot got a lone field goal from Autumn Lawson and some free throws. The Lady Irish got a pair of buckets by Olivia Eickhoff and lead 6-4 early.

In the second quarter Sacred Heart got seven points from Erison Vonderschmitt. Wynot countered with seven from Karley Heimes and an Autumn Lawson trey for a 17-15 halftime lead.

In the third quarter Vonderschmitt dumped in six more points and Delanie Witt and Danielle Bippes each hit a layup for the Lady Irish. Wynot got four points from Edyn Sudbeck and a basket inside from Karley Heimes but the Lady Irish took the 25-23 lead into the final period.

Sacred Heart and Wynot were waging a narrow battle through to the tail end of the third quarter and then things changed.

“They went up by about six and in games like that, you know it’s hard to score and come back,” coach Steve Wieseler said. “They do a good job of slowing the game down, they don’t make mistakes and they know us so well. It was hard to get the ball back. When they got on offense in the fourth quarter, they kept running it until they got what they wanted. That puts you in a tough situation where you have to hit three or four shots in a row to get back in it because you won’t get many possessions. We just struggled from the line (5-of-17). It became mental.”

In the fourth quarter the Lady Blue Devils picked a bad time to go cold on the offensive end. Sacred Heart got a pair of baskets by Olivia Eickhoff who knifed through Blue Devil defense for a pair of layins. Wynot’s Emersyn Sudbeck hit a floater in the lane but that would be their only basket from the field. FCSH hit 12-15 from the line down the stretch for the 41-27 win.
