Lady Cats pick up their first win at Wynot tourney

HARTINGTON — The Lady Wildcats are now 1-5 this season following a split with Crofton and a defeat against Bloomfield.

Hartington-Newcastle lost in a 3-2 thriller to Crofton to start last week’s play before splitting action Thursday at the Wynot Invitational, by beating Crofton (25-21, 25-15) and falling to Bloomfield (25-22, 25-14).

“Both times we played Crofton, the girls showed some great hustle on defense,” Lady Wildcats head coach Leigh Haselhorst said. “We had a lot of great team moments. We are still a young team and figuring things out and that shows from time to time. We are working on becoming more consistent.”

In the five-setter against Crofton, Erin Folkers had 15 kills and Kayden Jueden chipped in with 12 kills as defensively she also added 24 digs as Olivia Grutsch contributed 18 digs.

Alivia Morten quarterbacked the team with 30 assists.

Grutsch had 13 digs and Jueden 12 in the defeat to Bloomfield and in the win over Crofton, Jueden finished with six kills and 13 digs. Morten had 13 assists.

The team celebrated Parents Night Tuesday against Winnebago and travel to Creighton for a day-long tournament.

“I am excited to get after it this week at practice,” Haselhorst said. “The girls really clicked the last time we played Crofton and I hope they remember that feeling and run with it. It will be important for us to control our side and continue to work on that serve and pass game. Everything else seems to fall into place when we can win that.”
